Heal Your Eczema Naturally

Eczema is a condition that manifests in patchy areas of itching, erythema and scaling on the skin. Something triggers your body's immune system and it overreacts and attacks its own skin cells. Adult atopic eczema is known not to respond very well to medical therapy, which includes a variety of creams and ointments, and also, more powerful oral medications. Many such medicines can take away the pain, itching and redness you get in eczema, but unfortunately they can come with a vast array of different side-effects. The good news is that natural eczema remedies are a viable second option should conventional treatments fail.

How To Treat Eczema Using Oatmeal

Oats work by forming a protective layer over your skin, which helps to keep it moisturized. Oatmeal works best on the skin when you first make a powder out of it with the use of a blender. You can also buy the powdered form, called colloidal oatmeal. All you need to do to use the oatmeal for your eczema, is to mix it into your bathwater before you jump in. Use approximately 5-10 ounces per bath, although it doesn't hurt to use more.

After you have added the oats and mixed it into the water, you may find that over time the oats tend to gather at the bottom. Just move your body around in the bath to get the oats moving again. You can have an oatmeal bath as many times as you like during the week, though I recommend at least 3 times per week. Many people report good results after just the first use, though it generally takes a few weeks of consistent use before seeing notable improvement in your condition. Unlike many conventional treatments, you do not have to go on using oat-baths indefinitely. Just have some oats to hand in case of any flare-ups in your condition.

Changes In Lifestyle

On learning how to cure eczema, you'll find that eczema has a multitude of different triggers that may be responsible for you flare-ups. Just using an oatmeal bath may be an effective way to remedy your symptoms, but the only way to keep symptoms away for good is to identify the particular triggers that have caused your own unique case of eczema and to eliminate them from your life.

An excellent way to keep track of certain foods or activities that lead to a worsening of your symptoms, is to keep a diary. When people are committed to do this, they almost always notice a pattern of activities that are linked to a worsening of their condition - like exposure to cigarette smoke/pollution, the wearing of particular fabrics or perfumes, and the consumption of certain foods such as dairy. When you know what these triggers are, you can simply avoid them completely or reduce your exposure to them enough for your symptoms to stay away. When you do this it may be a good idea to make an appointment with your doctor to re-examine the need for your current medication. When people identify the triggers for their eczema, they commonly find that they no longer need to continue with their regular eczema treatment course.

One idea is to purchase special skin-friendly detergents from your local health store. If you have a second rinse option on your washing machine, then consider using it at least once to really get that detergent off your clothes. Whether topical solutions like avoiding scented detergents and soaps are successful or not, you will still benefit from a change in dietary habit. Avoid hyper allergic foods like shellfish, eggs, meat and dairy, and increase your consumption of all plant-based foods including nuts and seeds, and also oily fish. The above are a few of many different tactics you can use to help get rid of your eczema naturally.

Other Things To Think About

Despite these home remedies being effective, it is still necessary for you to get a full diagnosis from your doctor, since other serious skin conditions like psoriasis can easily be mistaken for eczema by the untrained eye. Many natural therapies, especially those you consume, do still have a natural chemical effect on your body, and can therefore interact with certain medications. So if you are taking other medications, make sure you consult your doctor before embarking on a journey of treating your eczema naturally.

Although home remedies are safe for healthy people, they may be harmful for people who suffer from other illnesses besides eczema. If you do have another illness and/or you are taking other medications, then it is crucial that you see your doctor first. Natural home remedies for eczema can give you some amazing results, but the best results will occur over a period of days, or more likely weeks, after combining a number of different methods. If your symptoms are particularly bad, then it wouldn't hurt to use medical drugs, at least temporarily to arrest those symptoms quicker. Oral steroids for example, can get working as quickly as 8 hours after administration. There is always the option of supplementing your conventional therapy with home remedies.
